Delegates were expected to endorse key political, organisational and financial reports before the convention turns to Thursday’s leadership election.Anil Giri
The Nepali Congress’s 15th general convention was disrupted on Wednesday after strong winds and heavy rain affected the closed-door session at Khula Manch.
Party spokesperson Devraj Chalise said delegates had been preparing to conclude discussions on various proposals and reports and adopt them during Wednesday’s session. The sudden storm and heavy rain, however, disrupted the proceedings, with delegates unable to reach the venue.
The closed-door session was originally scheduled to begin at 10:30am but was later pushed to 11:30am following a plan to hold it after the lunch break. The session was already underway at Khula Manch when the weather deteriorated.
The party has arranged the lunch venue at Bhrikuti Mandap, while the Election Committee is carrying out preparations at the City Hall. Voting for the new leadership is scheduled to begin Thursday morning.
After the day’s discussions, party president Gagan Thapa is scheduled to address the convention delegates. The party plans to formally conclude the closed-door session with his address.
Delegates have been discussing the party’s future political direction and organisational structure. Once the political, organisational and financial reports are endorsed, the convention will move into the leadership election process.
Candidates have already registered for the leadership contest. Gagan Thapa, Kishor Singh Rathore and Shyam Krishna Khadgi are contesting for the party presidency. With the electoral process now set to begin, the convention’s focus will shift to the leadership contest.
