Affordable places for Nepali students in Christchurch
A guide to budget-friendly housing options that offer comfort in this New Zealand city.
Post Report
Riccarton
Riccarton is one of Christchurch’s most popular suburbs for students, particularly those attending the University of Canterbury. The area is known for its convenience and strong student presence, making it a preferred choice for local and international students.
Pros
It is approximately 1.5 kilometres from the University of Canterbury and is well-connected to the city and Ara Institute by frequent bus services. The rent for shared flats typically ranges from NZD180 to NZD230 per week. Westfield Riccarton Mall and surrounding businesses offer good part-time job opportunities.
Cons
The demand for rentals is high here, especially at the start of each semester. Due to the large student population, some streets can be noisy.
Addington
Located southwest of Christchurch’s city centre, Addington is a practical suburb for students attending Ara Institute or working part-time there.

Pros
It is approximately 2.5 kilometres from central Christchurch and is well-connected by several bus routes. Rent is relatively affordable (NZD160 to NZD200 per week), and its proximity to the Central Business District offers good access to part-time jobs in cafes, hospitality, and retail.
Cons
It is far from the University of Canterbury, which may be less convenient for students studying there. Fewer international students reside here, so it feels less like a typical student district.
Phillipstown
Phillipstown is a small inner-city suburb located just south-east of the city centre. It contains a mix of residential, commercial, and industrial activities.

Pros
The suburb provides good access to Christchurch’s leading universities and tertiary institutes. Multiple bus routes pass through or near Phillipstown, linking it to central Christchurch, universities, the airport, and other parts of the city.
Cons
Housing in this suburb has historically been affordable. However, rental costs have increased in recent years.
Linwood
Linwood is an inner suburb situated east of the city centre, mainly between Ferry Road and Linwood Avenue, major arterial roads to the eastern suburbs. It is about 2 kilometres east of Christchurch’s central business district, making it approximately a 10-minute drive to the city centre.

Pros
Ara Institute of Canterbury is a major polytechnic that offers diplomas, degrees, and vocational training. Its campuses are in central Christchurch, easy to reach from Linwood.
Cons
Some parts of Linwood may feel less modern or need further community and infrastructure investment compared to newer or gentrified suburbs.
Ilam
Ilam is a quiet suburb next to the University of Canterbury, making it one of the most convenient student areas. It is also home to many international students, including many from Nepal.

Pros
Most residents can walk to the University of Canterbury campus, reducing transportation costs. The area also has supermarkets, cafes, and takeaway shops nearby, and shared housing rents typically range from NZD180 to NZD240 per week.
Cons
Being a prime student area, rent can be slightly higher than in suburbs farther away. Accommodation close to campus gets booked quickly before each semester starts.
