KU appoints Professor Bivek Baral as vice-chancellor
Baral, who studied mechanical engineering at Kathmandu University, has researched fuel, energy and environmental pollution and has taught at the university since 2004.
Kathmandu University has appointed Professor Bivek Baral as its new vice-chancellor.
Prime Minister and university Chancellor Balendra Shah appointed Baral to the post on Friday.
Baral studied mechanical engineering at Kathmandu University in 1999, becoming the first person educated at the university to rise to the position of vice-chancellor.
A selection committee led by Education Minister and Pro-Chancellor Sasmit Pokharel had invited applications for the position.
Thirty-five candidates applied, of whom 10 were shortlisted. After evaluating their work plans and vision statements, the committee interviewed the shortlisted candidates and recommended three names, including Baral, for appointment.
According to sources at the education ministry, Professor Bal Chandra Luintel and Rajendra Joshi were the other two candidates recommended for the post.
The appointment process began after then vice-chancellor Achyut Wagle was removed from office through an ordinance in .
According to Baral’s personal profile, he holds a master’s degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Tokyo and a PhD from the University of Auckland in New Zealand.
He has conducted research in fuel, energy and environmental pollution alongside his teaching career. He currently works in the department of mechanical engineering at KU’s School of Engineering.
Baral joined Kathmandu University as an assistant professor in 2004 and was promoted to professor in 2018.
