Police have arrested Nepal Hajj Committee President Shamsher Miya in connection with the fake Bhutanese refugee scam.
Miya was arrested from Singha Durbar on Thursday.
The accused has been taken to the Teku Police Office where he will remain in custody, said Kathmandu Police Circle Chief Senior Superintendent of Police Dan Bahadur Karki.
“The police are preparing the documentation for the court. Miya will be kept in Teku for further investigation,” Karki added.
Police said they arrested Miya as his vehicle was found to be used by the members of the criminal group to carry out the scam.
The Hajj Committee, which Miya has been heading for over two years, is under the home ministry.
The then home minister Ram Bahadur Thapa of CPN-UML had appointed him as chief of the committee in January 2021. Later, Bal Krishna Khand of the Nepali Congress, who succeeded Thapa, also gave continuity to Miya even though the head of the committee was often changed with the change in government leadership. An arrest warrant has been issued against Thapa’s son Pratik on charge of being involved in the same scam.
