Maoists bid to placate allies
UCPN (Maoist) has started working towards mending its ties with the Madhes-based and the ethnic parties, the key allies in the Maoist-led 30-party opposition alliance.
To clear the air, UCPN (Maoist) Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal held a meeting with Madhesi leaders, Upendra Yadav, Rajendra Mahato and Bijaya Gachhadar on Thursday and assured them that his party has not made any agreement with the ruling Nepali Congress and CPN-UML on the contents of new constitution.
Dahal maintained that though the ruling parties seem positive on drafting the constitution in consensus, there has not been any agreements yet.
Madhes-based and ethnic parties are in favour of pressing the opposition demands through street protests.
Senior Maoist leader Baburam Bhattarai said the meeting focused on convening the meeting of the 30-party alliance and the relevance of street protest. “We will hold a formal meeting after another round of consultation,” Bhattarai said. The UCPN (Maoist) also consulted with Chairman of Federal Socialist Party Ashok Rai.
Rai said most of the opposition parties are in favour of boycotting the CA meeting unless there is an agreement on the contents of new constitution. Only UCPN(Maoist) and the Gachhadar-led Madhesi Janadhikar Forum-Loktantrik are for attending the CA meeting .
Sarbendra Nath Shukla, a senior leader of Tarai Madhes Loktantrik Party, said despite misunderstandings among the opposition allies, the 30-party alliance will remain united. “The 30-party alliance will remain intact until the promulgation of new constitution,” Shukla claimed.
