A community health post has been established in the remote village of Tikot, Histan, in memory of Naina Singh Pun, the father of a retired British Gurkha major Chandra Bahadur.Ghana Shyam Khadka
Chandra Bahadur and his family members set up a fund of Rs 2.1 million for running the health facility. The health post operates from a community building.
In a major improvement to the access of health centres in the area, more than 300 families of Histan VDC-1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 will avail of the facilities. The residents otherwise had to walk six hours to reach a nearby sub health post for treatment.
“With the establishment of health facility, locals no more have to walk long distances for treatment for even the smallest of diseases,” said Pradip Pun, coordinator of the health post management committee and also the headmaster of Tikot Secondary School.
Aaule Sub Health Post, which is located nearby the village, provides free medicines given by the government, he said. The health facility also purchased medicines worth Rs 20,000, while donors provided additional medicines worth Rs 10,000.
Dhanmaya Sherpurja, a certified medical assistant, and rural health worker Reu Kumari Pun have been appointed to the health post and the funds pay their salaries, Pradip said.
“We even treat patients at their doorsteps and are currently helping carry out the immunisation programme launched by the government,” said Reumati. Pregnant women, children and elderly have benefited the most from the health facility, she added.
The VDC is the ancestral village of Chandra Bahadur Pun, who is currently living in Pokhara.
Apart from the donations, Chandra Bahadur also funded Rs 1.7 million to construct a building for Tikut Secondary School two years ago. He also offered Rs 1 million for building a local road and another Rs 700,000 for a play ground in the village.
