Tarun Dal, the youth wing of the ruling Nepali Congress, has unanimously elected its office bearers, with Jit Jung Basnet at the helm.
The 4th general convention of the Congress’ youth organisation concluded in Pokhara on Wednesday as the directive commiteee formed by the party to hold polls finally settled their disputes.
The central body will get its full shape once the directive commitee holds its next meeting in Kathmandu, leaders said.
Basnet and Bidhwan Gurung (treasurer) are from the establishment side, Uttam Chapagain who has the backing of Krishna Prasad Sitaula is the vice-chairman, the post of general secretary went to Bhupendra Jung Shahi from senior leader Ram Chandra Poudel-led team. The three rival camps in the party are yet to agree on the distribution of central commitee members.
At a press conference, Defence Minister Bal Krishna Khand, also the head of the directive committee, expressed belief that the attempt to seek consenus would help the party stick together in future. “We have the constitution amendment, its implementation and polls to look foward to. It is crucial to show a united front at this juncture,” Khand said.
Congratulating the new leadership, outgoing Tarun Dal chairman Udaya Rana said the new team would take the youth organisation to new heights. Basnet took oath by pledging to focus on work issues. “Creating jobs, training youths, ending discrimination and corruption will be my goal,” he said.
