Bharatpur Hospital in Chitwan district is facing severe financial constraints as the government has failed to provide necessary budget for the treatment of earthquake victimsPawan Yadav
The hospital claimed that although it has spent Rs 6.5 million for the treatment of the quake victims admitted at the hospital, the government has only provided Rs 500,000 to the hospital so far.
Medical Superintendent at the Bharatpur Hospital, Maniklal Manandhar, said the hospital spent anywhere between Rs 40,000 to Rs 60,000 for the treatment of each quake victim, though the government has only allocated Rs 25, 000 as treatment expenses for each patient seriously injured in the earthquake.
The hospital said it has treated 232 quake-affected patients while 96 more have undergone surgery at the hospital for various injuries.
Manandhar further informed that the hospital cannot solely bear the mounting expenses incurred while treating patients who suffered various injuries in the earthquake.
“The government has not even provided funds for the treatment of patients who have suffered minor injuries in the April 25 earthquake and endless series of aftershocks,” he said, adding that the hospital has been facing several financial difficulties to treat the quake-affected patients due to which other services at the hospital has been severely affected.
Chairman of Hospital Development Committee Bijaya Subedi said that in view of the mounting costs, the hospital has requested the Ministry of Health to provide sufficient fund for the treatment of quake-affected patients receiving medical check-up at the hospital.
“The April 25 earthquake and aftershocks has greatly depleted the hospital’s income,” said Subedi, adding that they are even facing problems to provide salary to the hospital staff. Likewise, the condition of Hospital Development Committee is so deplorable that it cannot even manage funds for the treatment of injured quake victims, he said.
Meanwhile, doctors and other health staff at the hospital have been working round-the-clock in order to treat the constant stream of patients in the hospital following the death and devastation wrought by the April 25 earthquake. Dr Shrawan Kumar Thapa said that the hospital is facing various problems due to lack enough human resources to deal with the sudden deluge of quake-affected patients coming to the hospital for treatment.
Patients from Gorkha, Nuwakot, Dhading, Tanahun, including other quake-affected districts are being ferried to the hospital. Sometimes even patients from Kathmandu have been referred here, Dr Thapa said.
