Leader Sahana cremated with nat’l honour
Senior CPN-UML leader Sahana Pradhan, who died on Monday night, was cremated at the Pashupati Aryaghat with national honour on Tuesday. She was 88.

Acting Prime Minister Bamdev Gautam draped Pradhan's mortal remains with the national flag. A contingent of the Nepal Army offered final guard of honour to the late leader.
Similarly, CPN-UML leader KP Sharma Oli laid the party flag and Chairperson of All Nepal Women's Association (ANWA) Bidhyadevi Bhandari draped the association's flag over Pradhan's body. Pradhan's son Umesh Shrestha lit the funeral pyre.
Top leaders of the party, Ministers Radha Gyawali and Neelam KC, CPN-Maoist Vice-chairman CP Gajurel, CPN-ML General Secretary CP Mainali and leftist leader Radha Krishna Mainali, among others, paid their last respects to leader Pradhan.
UML Secretary Yogesh Bhattarai informed that Pradhan’s body will be kept at UML party headquarters in Balkhu for final tributes and will be cremated later today at Pashupati Aryaghat.
Born in 1927, Pradhan was actively involved in country’s democratic movements .
Married to another veteran communist leader Pushpa Lal Shrestha, she had staged a 15-day hunger strike demanding education to women with the then Rana Prime Minister Padma Shamsher.
Pradhan was appointed as Minister of Commerce and Supplies during an interim government in 1990. She also became Minister for Women, Children and Social Welfare in 1996 and Minister for Foreign Affairs in 2005.
She is survived by a son and a daughter.
