Hundreds of families have been displaced as scores of houses were swept away and dozens of settlements inundated across the country due to the water induced disasters.

Police said the Itram river swept away more than 50 houses at Birendranagar-11. Likewise, 25 houses were swept away at Birendranagar-1 by the flooded Aap stream while around 100 houses have been inundated.

Traffic on the Surkhet-Nepalgunj road came to a halt due to landslides at several places.

The District Administration Office said that security personnel have been deployed to the affected areas for rescue operation.

Six people lost their lives in flood-related incidents at Duruwa, Urahari and Purandhara VDCs in Dang.

Police said seven people went missing at Dhanauri and one at Duruwa when their houses collapsed due to rains.

Police rescued 55 persons who had been marooned at Duruwa, Goltakuri and Srinagar VDCs since Thursday night due after the swelling Babai river burst its banks. More than 200 houses were submerged in the areas.

Traffic on the Lamahi-Tulsipur and Tulsipur-Amiliya roads have been obstructed due to floods and landslides.

In Banke, two persons were killed at Kachanapur-2 and Phattepur, police said. Two more went missing at Kamdi and Kohalpur after they were swept away by swelling streams.

Fifteen people remained out of contact, displacing as many as 500 in Bardiya. Ninety percent of the settlement in Gulariya has been inundated, police said.

Transport was obstructed on the Gulariya-Nepalgunj road as a 3-km road stretch was flooded by the swelling Babai river.

In Rolpa, two persons died and another went missing in separate landslides at Ranka VDC. Landlides killed four others, two each in Salyan and Rukum.

Likewise, four persons were swept away by flooded rivers and streams in Chitwan, Sarlahi and Makawanpur. One person went missing in a landslide in Nawalparasi, while hundreds were displaced by floods and landslides in the central and western Tarai districts.  

In Siraha, two persons went missing when they were swept away by floods at Bhokraha and Majhauliya. Two hundred twenty-one people were displaced, police said.

Three persons were killed and 11 other injured when a landslide hit a school building in Phinam-6 in Gorkha.  

Three children were missing after being swept away by the Ruwakhola at Asigram in Dadeldhura. The victims were on their way to school. Similarly, two persons were missing in Kailali and Bajura, with around hundred people being displaced by floods in the Karnali and Mohana rivers. A 60-year-old man was swept away by flooded Arji stream in Saptari.

Two persons were swept away by floods in Okhaldhunga and one in Argakhanchi.       

Meanwhile, transportation has been obstructed along the East-West Highway in Banke district after the flooded Paruwakhola damaged a bridge at Samsergunj. Hundreds of passengers have been stranded in the area.

The traffic also remain obstructed in the Dhanusha-Mahottari stretch along the highway on Friday, cutting off the eastern region from rest of the country. The Ratu bridge, linking Dhanusha and Mahottari, had caved in on Wednesday after the flood damaged one of its foundation pillars.

Rescue Efforts: Control room set up at PM’s residence

A control room has been set up at the Prime Minister’s official residence in Baluwatar on Friday in order to ensure effectiveness and dynamism in rescue, search and rehabilitation efforts in the recent floods and landslides that killed scores of people and destroyed property worth billions of rupees.

Senior government officials, including Chief Secretary, Chief of the Army Staff, Defense Secretary, Home Secretary, Inspector General of Nepal Police and Inspector General of Armed Police Force, will report the PM about the latest status of natural calamities as well as rescue and rehabilitation efforts.

A statement issued by the PM’s private secretariat has urged the officials to provide related data and information to the control room for swiftimplementation of rescue and rehabilitation work.
