Fencing:
Japan’s Koki Kano won the epee final with Yannick Borel securing the silver.
Mohamed Elsayed of Egypt was awarded epee bronze after a tough bout with Hungary’s Tibor Andrasfi, winning 8-7 in the last second of sudden death.
France had another night of frustration as they failed to deliver a gold medal for the second day in a row for a Paris Olympics fencing title with Yannick Borel losing painfully 15-9 to Kano.
Borel’s defeat was reminiscent of Hong Kong’s Vivian Kong victory against France’s Auriane Mallo-Breton in the women’s epee event on Saturday.
Mohamed Elsayed of Egypt was awarded epee bronze after a tough bout with Hungary’s Tibor Andrasfi, winning 8-7 in the last second of sudden death.
Lee Kiefer and Lauren Scruggs gave the United States gold and silver in the women’s foil on Sunday.
Kiefer secured a comfortable 15-6 victory over her younger teammate Scruggs in the final at the stunning Grand Palais venue.
It was an all-North American podium in the women’s foil event, with Canada’s Eleanor Harvey winning bronze.
Skateboarding:
Japan’s 14-year-old Coco Yoshizawa led a trio of teens on the podium in the women’s street skateboarding at the Paris Olympics on Sunday, in front of a sellout crowd at the La Concorde venue.
Her compatriot Liz Akama took silver, while Brazil’s Rayssa Leal claimed bronze.
Akama, who had a slim lead heading into the best tricks, nailed a sublime 270 switch front board on her opening attempt but could not improve on that effort.
Shooting:
Xie Yu of China struck gold in a dream Olympic debut in the men’s 10 metre air pistol and Oh Ye-jin led a South Korean 1-2 in the women’s event on Sunday.
After China won the 10-metre air rifle mixed team event on Saturday, Xie (240.9) mined another gold from the Chateauroux Shooting Centre, beating Italian Federico Nilo Maldini (240) who took the silver medal.
Paolo Monna (218.6) claimed bronze and stood gazing at the floor after signing off with a modest 9.5.
Similar camaraderie prevailed in the women’s competition where 19-year-old Oh Ye Jin of Korea beat roommate Kim Ye-ji to the gold and Manu Bhaker won India’s first medal in the Paris Games.
Oh tallied 243.2 to set an Olympic record and Kim 241.3.
Bhaker (221.7) settled for the bronze but became the first Indian woman shooter to win an Olympic medal.
Cycling:
Pauline Ferrand-Prevot delivered France’s second gold medal of the Paris Olympics as she took a high-quality field apart to win the women’s cross-country mountain bike race on Sunday.
The 32-year-old produced a devastating acceleration at the start of the second of seven laps around the dusty 4.4 km circuit on Elancourt Hill and rode solo to victory.
Haley Batten of the United States secured silver and Jenny Rissveds of Sweden settled for bronze.
Canoeing:
Australia’s Jessica Fox stormed to Olympic gold in the women’s kayak slalom in a time of 96.08 seconds, recovering from a poor semi-final performance to smash the field at the Vaires-sur-Marne Nautical Stadium on Sunday.
Poland’s Klaudia Zwolinska picked up the silver medal, with Briton Kimberley Woods hanging on for the bronze after a thrilling climax that saw German reigning champion Ricarda Funk disastrously miss a gate on the very last run of the day.
Swimming:
World record holder French Leon Marchand stormed to the 400-metre individual medley gold at his home Paris Olympics on Sunday at La Defense Arena.
The 22-year-old, nicknamed the "French Michael Phelps", carried the expectations of a nation into his first event but he simply crushed his rivals in a swim of four minutes and 2.95 seconds that broke the Olympic record and flirted with his world record mark.
Japan’s Tomoyuki Matsushita took the silver while American Carson Foster settled in an individual medley event.
Torri Huske reeled in US teammate and world record holder Gretchen Walsh to win the women’s 100-metre butterfly gold by 0.04 of a second on an electric night in the Paris Olympic pool on Sunday.
The 2022 world champion touched out in 55.59 to secure the US team’s first individual swimming gold of the 2024 Games, with Gretchen Walsh taking silver in 55.63 after leading at the turn-on world record pace.
China’s Zhang Yufei took the bronze.
Italy’s Nicolo Martinenghi won the men’s 100 metres breaststroke gold at the Paris Olympics on Sunday and ended Adam Peaty’s “three-peat” bid to win the same event at three successive Games.
Peaty, hoping to become only the second male swimmer after retired US great Michael Phelps to perform the triple, had to settle for silver alongside reigning world champion Nic Fink of the United States.
Archery:
South Korea won their 10th consecutive gold medal in women’s team archery in a nail-biting shoot-off as their three first-time Olympians held off China 5-4 at the Paris Games on Sunday.
The win helped to maintain South Korea’s complete dominance of the event, winning every gold medal since women’s team archery was introduced at the Olympics in 1988.
China had to settle for the silver medal and Mexico won the bronze.
