On Thursday, Tanmaya Gahamagar, Soti Rana and Chameli Darlami Magar died after being buried by a mud mound while digging a trench for sewer construction at Phalphul Chowk of Kawasoti Municipality.
Locals protested against the municipality and the contractors, accusing them of failing to take even basic safety measures while carrying out the construction.
The situation was tense on Friday morning as the agitating protesters vandalised the municipality office and Mayor Bishnu Prasad Bhusal’s house.
A clash had occurred between the locals and the security personnel who were attempting to bring the situation under control after the protesters attempted to set fire to the mayor’s residence.
Over a dozen rounds of tear gas shells were lobbed. Five police officers injured in the incident are receiving treatment at the district hospital.
