Sunny Patel returns to Nepal’s franchise cricket scene
A day after appointing Robin Singh as mentor, Lumbini Lions bring in Tinu Yohannan as coach.Post Report
Sunny Patel is back to play cricket in Nepal.
Patel played in Everest Premier League (EPL), Dhangadhi Premier League (DPL) and Pokhara Premier League (PPL). Further, he has lifted the trophy in all the three tournaments.
The Indian lifted the EPL in 2018 with Lalitpur Patriots, the DPL in 2019 with CYC Attariya and the PPL in 2019 with Chitwan Rhinos.
Patel was also part of the MI New York’s winning team in USA’s Major League Cricket in July this year.
Having won most of the tournaments he has played in, Patel’s entry in Kathmandu Gorkhas for the second season of the Nepal Premier League has elated Gorkhas’ fans.
“Sunny has been an integral part of the Atlanta Fire setup, and I’ve seen first-hand the energy, consistency, and match awareness he brings to every contest,” said Gorkhas’ head coach Monty Desai, who landed in Kathmandu on Friday to take charge of the team.
“Sunny’s ability to contribute with both bat and ball—alongside his experience with MI New York in Major League Cricket—makes him a genuine asset. We’re excited to have him join the Kathmandu Gorkhas family, where his versatility and professionalism will strengthen the balance of our side.”
Yohannan in Lumbini’s den
Tinu Yohannan did not have a long playing career for the senior Indian team despite debuting in Test and ODI in 2001 and 2002, respectively. He only played three matches each in both the formats becoming the first player from Kerala to play in the major formats for the national team of India.
He was also part of only 59 First Class and 45 List A matches.
A right-arm medium pacer, Yohannan was the chief coach of Kerala Cricket Association from 2020. Before that, he was Kearla’s bowling coach and interim head coach. He was Andhra Pradesh’s head coach in the 2024–25 season.
Now, Yohannan will take charge of Lumbini Lions’ coaching staff—which comprises the likes of Indian Rupesh Singh alongside Nepali legends Shakti Gauchan and Subash Khakurel.
