Sudurpashchim Royals secure playoff spot with dramatic win over Pokhara Avengers

Sudurpashchim Royals clinched a dramatic five-run victory over Pokhara Avengers on Sunday at the Tribhuvan University Cricket Ground in Kirtipur, securing their place in the Nepal Premier League playoffs.
Chasing a target of 154 runs, Pokhara fell short, being bowled out for 148 in the final over. Despite being in a strong position at one point, Pokhara were undone in the final moments, losing three crucial wickets as they edged closer to victory.
Earlier, Sudurpashchim posted a total of 153/7 in their 20 overs after being asked to bat first. Aarif Sheikh remained unbeaten on 42, playing a crucial knock off 38 balls, including two fours and one six. Brandon McMullen contributed 23, while captain Dipendra Singh Airee added 20. Ishan Pandey made 10 before retiring hurt.
Pokhara's bowlers did their best to keep the chase within reach, with skipper Kushal Bhurtel taking two wickets. Michael Leask, Raymon Reifer, and Sagar Dhakal each picked up one wicket, but it wasn’t enough to stop the Royals from reaching a competitive total.
In reply, Pokhara’s top-order put up a strong fight, with Andries Gous scoring 36 runs off 21 balls, including four fours and two sixes. Raymon Reifer added 33, while Kiran Thagunna chipped in with 32. However, the team’s middle order collapsed under pressure as they lost their final three wickets in the closing moments of the match.
Scott Kuggeleijn was the standout bowler for Sudurpashchim, claiming five wickets for just 26 runs, including a maiden over. Harmeet Singh supported with three wickets, and Saif Zaib also claimed one.
The loss for Pokhara means they have failed to secure a playoff berth, while Sudurpashchim, topping the league table, are now set to play in the upcoming qualifiers. Sudurpashchim will face Karnali Yaks in their final league match on Monday, where a victory will see them finish in the top spot.
