Fast bowler Chris Woakes claimed 4-54 as England bowled out Australia for 286 in a World Cup group match at the Narendra Modi Stadium on Saturday.
Put into bat, Australia lost both the openers inside six overs but Marnus Labuschagne (71) combined with Steve Smith (44) to steady the innings.
Cameron Green (47) and Marcus Stoinis (35) came up with useful cameos but England bowlers denied Australia any late flourish and bowled them out with three deliveries still left in the innings.
