The dispute between national cricketers, led by former captain Gyanendra Malla, and the Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) has been solved for now. Among the 30 players called for the closed camp training, 29, except for captain Sandip Lamicchane, have reported by Monday evening. Lamichhane is currently in Australia playing in the Big Bash League.
Nine players led by Malla had boycotted the closed camp training that kicked off on Monday, expressing their dissatisfaction over players' grading and central contract for the first six months of 2022. Following marathon meetings held on Sunday and Monday between CAN officials, including president Chatur Bahadur Chand, and players, the cricket governing body has agreed to withdraw the punishment imposed on four players — former captain Malla, Dipendra Singh Airee, Sompal Kami and Kamal Singh Airee — for publicly expressing their dissatisfaction over players' grading.
Apart from that, CAN has also agreed to pay incentives to three players — Rohit Kumar Paudel, Bikram Sob and Gulshan Jha — who were not included in the central contract in response to the demands of players who had urged them to be included in the contract.
Only 20 players have reported to the closed camp training of the ICC World T20 Global Qualifiers set to take place in Oman in February. Among the 20, only 14 players attended training on Monday, as five other players were yet to get a PCR report while another one skipped training due to illness.
Meanwhile, the remaining nine players reported to the team's hotel late on Monday evening.
According to a CAN official who attended the meeting, the dissatisfied players had reported to the team hotel late on Monday evening and they would join the training after fulfilling the required procedures.
"I am hopeful that all players will join the training in a day or two. There were a lot of positive discussions between the CAN and players," said Nepal's newly reappointed coach Pubudu Dassanayake on Monday. “I think all the disputes have been solved and I am confident that the players will join the camp.”
The cricket governing body last month had announced the four players would not be offered central contracts for the first six months of 2022, alleging them of violating the code of conduct. CAN has also stripped the captain and vice captain of their duties in the national side.
However, CAN has said that changing captaincy was a regular process and they were not punishing the players.
