Nepal Sambat 1145 begins today
People from the Newar community to observe Mha Puja in the evening.Post Report
The Nepal Sambat New Year 1145 is being celebrated on Saturday with various programmes and festivities. The Newar community marks this day as New Year’s Day, honouring the indigenous calendar of Nepal.
The Nepal Sambat was initiated by Shankhadhar Sakhwa in 880 AD, when he relieved the people from debt during the reign of Lichchhavi King Raghavdev. In recognition of his significant contribution, the government declared Sakhwa a national luminary on November 18, 1999.
In the evening, the Newar community will observe the Mha Puja ritual, which focuses on the worship of the self. This ritual is based on the belief that a satisfied soul pleases the gods, leading to a meaningful and prosperous life.
Additionally, the government officially recognised the Nepal Sambat on October 23, 2008. Today, various leaders, including the President, Vice-President, and prime minister, have issued statements wishing everyone celebrating Nepal Sambat a joyful new year.
This occasion is particularly significant for the Newar population residing in Kathmandu, Lalitpur, Bhaktapur, Banepa, Dhulikhel, Bahrabise, and Dolakha, who celebrate it as a major festival.
