The Gaura festival was celebrated at Tundikhel on Sunday with Deuda dance, bringing together residents of Sudurpaschim Province and others living in the Kathmandu Valley. The event was organised by the Prashansa Samrakshan Group.
As part of the tradition, women observing the festival carried the idol of Goddess Gaura from the Gauraghar to the Gaurakhala courtyard, where they performed collective worship with biruda—a mixture of five different grains—singing fag hymns throughout the day. They also adorned themselves with consecrated dubdhago, a sacred thread, similar to the janai worn by men.
The rituals included narrations of Gaura’s origin and her marriage to Maheshwar through fag songs. After the worship, the biruda was offered as the main prasad to husbands, children, and relatives for their long life and prosperity.
Men participated in traditional cultural games such as Thadokhel and Dhusko Dhamari.
