Engineering students protest at Tribhuvan University against teachers’ strike
Demand exam dates and call for an end to class disruptions caused by protests.
Post Report
Engineering students staged a protest in front of the vice-chancellor’s office at Tribhuvan University on Sunday, opposing the ongoing protest by teachers of the Institute of Engineering (IoE) that has led to the suspension of classes.
Teachers at Pulchowk, Thapathali, Pokhara, Dharan and Chitwan engineering campuses have halted teaching since July 9, accusing the university of curtailing financial autonomy granted under the decentralisation policy.
Holding placards with slogans like “Save IoE,” “When will exams be held?” and “TU is ruining our future,” students criticised the ongoing disruption, saying it has jeopardised their academic progress.
The teachers initiated sit-ins at the campuses after the university cut the financial authority granted in 1998.
According to them, the university’s 2023 Senate decision infringed the autonomy framework, which had provided decentralised units with greater freedom in academic, administrative, and financial affairs.
