Nepal is voting on Friday to elect people’s representatives to govern 753 local governments across the country for the next five years.
People queued up at various polling stations across the country from 7am on Friday, to exercise their franchise.
“Voting is going on peacefully across the country,” Shaligram Sharma Poudel, spokesperson at the Election Commission, told the Post.
The Election Commission said in a press statement that voting in some areas in Dolakha, Sarlahi, Saptari, Ramechhap, Parbat and Bajura were affected due to some disputes.
Nepal is holding local elections for a second time since the promulgation of the constitution in 2015. The 2017 local elections were held in three phases on May 14, June 28 and September 18.
This time the country will hold local elections in a single phase.
A total of 17,733,723 voters are registered to vote in the local elections across the country. Of them, 8,992,010 are males, 8,741,530 females and 183 have been registered under the “others” category.
The Election Commission has set up 10,756 polling stations and 21,955 voting booths across the country.
As many as 35,221 representatives will be elected for 753 local units.
In municipalities, 586 mayors and deputy mayors, and in rural municipalities, 920 chairs and vice chairs will be elected. For 6,743 wards, as many chairpersons and 33,715 office bearers will be elected.
As many as 79 political parties are registered for the local elections. A total of 145,011 individuals are contesting for various posts. Of them, 390 have already been elected unopposed.
