Police on Monday afternoon detained around two dozen human rights activists and civil society members who had gathered in Baluwatar, Kathmandu to protest against the dissolution of the House of Representatives.

Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli on December 20 dissolved the House following a crisis in the Nepal Communist Party.

Political parties, civil society members and rights defenders have been protesting against the House dissolution move, which experts on constitutional affairs say is unconstitutional, as the Constitution of Nepal does not allow a majority prime minister to do so.

The demonstrators on Monday protested also against the government’s attempts to influence the court and controversial remarks made by the prime minister against lawyers and the judiciary.

Police said all those detained have been kept at the Nepal Police Club.

On December 21 last year, a day after the House dissolution, police had detained 16 rights activists for demonstrating against the move from the southern gate of Singha Durbar.
