Tamang people across the country celebrated Sonam Losar—the beginning of the New Year— with zest and zeal on Thursday.

On the occasion, the Tamang people spend the day at home with their near and dear ones and feast on a variegated cuisine.

Sonam Losar is celebrated on the first day of the new moon during the month of Magh in Bikram Sambat (BS) calendar.

Tamangs divide their years into 12 cycles, each one for a year, which is given a special name, represented by one of the 12 animals for each year.

The government has declared public holiday today to celebrate the festival.
