Anti-corruption crusader and senior orthopaedic surgeon Dr Govinda KC has filed a direct application to Chief Justice Gopal Prasad Parajuli demanding that he should make public his citizenship details.
The move comes a day after Dr KC announced to stage a fast-unto-death protest against the CJ. Dr KC has also asked CJ Parajuli to provide his academic character and transfer certificate that he used to gain higher degrees and his appointment as justice of the apex court.
Dr KC filed application through the Secretariat of Chief Justice.
Earlier, Dr KC and his team had filed an application at CJ Parajuli’s personal secretariat, but the latter did not respond.
In his written application, Dr KC has stated that the character certificate and transfer certificate of CJ Parajuli remain missing from the government records.
“I am taking the legal route demanding the documents of CJ Parajuli that are of public interest. The more he denies us the answer, the more the reason for us to suspect that he might have faked his way to the top of the country’s judiciary,” said Dr KC.
In a two-page application, Dr KC has said that there was an apparent conflict of interest when CJ Parajuli decided to resolve the issue of his own birthdate from the Judicial Council on June 13, 2017.
Dr KC on Sunday also filed a Right to Information (RTI) at the National Information Commission after the Kathmandu and Tanahu district administration offices denied providing citizenship details of CJ Parajuli.
Besides the district offices of Kathmandu and Tanahu, the National Examination Board has also refused to provide copies of Parajuli’s education certificates to Dr KC and his team.
Dr KC is protesting against CJ Parajuli after the apex court decided to reinstate Dr Shashi Sharma as the dean of the TU Institute of Medicine on January 7.
Dr KC had announced an indefinite fast following the court ruling saying that the decision to reinstate Dr Sharma was a “systematic effort to affiliate new [medical] colleges and to imperil the country’s medical education”.
He embarked on a hunger strike on January 8 demanding CJ Parajuli’s resignation and action against him. But he was rounded up the same evening on a court contempt charge, leading to his trial in the court.
Ever since, Dr KC has sought probe into the citizenship and academic certificates of CJ Parajuli, charging him with lacking the transfer certificate and using multiple dates of birth in official documents. The CJ is found to have submitted multiple documents to government bodies, showing four different dates of birth.
