Govt announces 61 municipalities
The government on Tuesday announced 61 new municipalities with the aim of giving uniformity in infrastructure and other development works.With the new announcement taken by the Social Committee meeting of the Cabinet, the total number of municipalities in the country has reached 191, which includes one metropolitan city and 11 sub-metropolitan cities.
Nine new municipalities have been added in Kathmandu, four in Bhaktapur and three in Lalitpur.
Earlier on May 8, the government had announced 72 new municipalities. Proposal to add five more municipalities in Gylang (Syangja), Bajrabarahi (Lalitpur), Bhimad Rising and Bhanu (Tanahu), and Babai (Bardiya). Officials at the ministry told the Post that seven more sub-metropolitan cities will be announced through the next Cabinet meeting. They are Itahari, Dharan, Janakpur, Hetuda, Butwal and Nepalgunj.
At present, Lalitpur, Biratnagar, Pokhara and Birgunj are given sub-metropolitan status.
The new municipalities in Kathmandu district are Gokarneshwor, Dakshinkali, Tarakeshwor, Shankarapura, Chandragiri, Bageshowori Manahara, Tokha, Nagarjun, and Budhanilkanta.
Similarly, Anantalineshowr, Surya Binayak, Chandgu Narayan and Maha Manjushree Nagarkot of Bhaktapur have also been given the municipality status.
The other places to receive municipality status outside the Kathmandu Valley are: Patan (Baitadi), Deumai (Ilam), Shiva Satakchi (Jhapa), Letang Bhogteni (Morang), Ramdhuni Bhasi (Sunsari), Pakhribas (Dhunkuta), Sadananda (Bhojpur), Madi (Sankhuwasabha), Saptakosi (Saptari), Golbazar (Siraha), Dudhkunda (Solukhumbu), Badimalika (Bajura), Bhajani (Kailali), Parshuram (Dadheldura), Bardibas (Mahotarri), Garuda (Rautahat), Pokhariya (Parsa), Kashikandha (Kavre), Melamchi (Sindhupalchok), Sundarbazar (Lamjung), Bheri Ganga (Surkhet), Musikot (Rukum), Palungtar (Gorkha), Jiri (Dolakha), Manthali (Ramecchap), and Dudauli (Sindhuli), Godaghodi (Kailali).
In case of some districts, the government has given municipality status to more than one region.
They are: Mahagadi Mai, Simaurnagadh and Hohalbi in Bara; Badhganga and Buddhabatika in Kapilvastu; Ganeshman Charnath, Mithila and Sabaila in Dhanusha; Raratal and Basgadi in Bardiya; Madi and Narayani in Chitwan; Lamahi and Tripur in Dang; and Chadani Dodhara and Jhalari Pipladi in Kanchanpur.
