NSU directed to form 121-member CWC
Nepal Congress on Tuesday decided to decrease the central working committee (CWC) size of its sister wing Nepal Student Union.Amending the proposal of NSU, the office bearers meeting of NC directed its student wing to bring down the number of the CWC from the proposed 151 to 121.
Earlier, NSU had tabled a proposal at the NC headquarters for approving the 151-member jumbo committee with 31 office bearers.
According to the new organisational structure, the NSU will have one chairperson, two vice-chairpersons, two general secretaries, eight joint general secretaries and one treasurer.
The 11th general convention of NSU is scheduled to kickoff in the Capital on Sunday. NSU, however, has yet to hold the conventions in seven districts and around two dozen colleges, owing to the dispute over the selection of representatives.
The NSU has failed to conduct the conventions in Bara, Parsa, Kaski, Dhanusha, Siraha, Rautahat districts and in Saraswati Campus, Nepal Commerce Campus and Bishwo Bhasa Campus, among others, which is the basis of selecting general convention representatives. NSU convention has been postponed for five times earlier due the dispute between the two factions close to establishment and senior leader Sher Bahadur Deuba.
NC has assured that the convention will not be postponed this time. The party has directed its student wing to hold the convention at any cost. “The union cadres will not use any excuse to postpone the general convention this time,” said Motilal Bhandari, spokesperson of the convention organising committee. He said that NC is mulling to share the representatives in 60:40 ratio between establishment and Deuba faction at places where conventions are yet to be held.
Around one dozen NSU leaders are running for the presidential berth. The leaders from the establishment faction, including Govinda Bhattarai, Gagan Thapa and Guru Ghimire have been tasked to forge a consensus to field only one candidate from the panel. Similarly, Bimalendra Nidhi, Bal Krishna Khad, NC Saud and Prakash Saran Mahat are also preparing to field a single candidate from the Deuba faction.
Manoj Mani Acharya, Kshitiz Bhandari, Kundan Kafle, Deepak Bhatarai, Kedar Karki, Nilkantha Rijal and Deepak Adhikari from the establishment and Jit Jung Basnet, Nain Singh Mahar and Suva Ram Basnet from the Deuba faction are looking forward to become a new NSU president.
