Army’s runners dominate 4th Lumbini Peace Marathon

The fourth edition of the Lumbini Peace Marathon on Saturday saw Tribhuvan Army Club runners dominate the podium finishes.
Army’s Binod Rokaya finished first, clocking 2 hours 17 minutes and 55 seconds.
Rokaya’s teammates followed him to the finish line. A minute later, Army’s Sushil Kumar Shahi came in second, clocking 2 hours 18 minutes and 16 seconds. Narendra Singh Raut clocked 2 hours 19 minutes and 58 seconds to finish third.
Rokaya, Shahi and Raut bagged Rs350,000, Rs250,000 and Rs150,000, respectively.
China’s Wang Chi (2:21:05) was fourth and was followed by Kenya’s Julius Wakome (2:23:00) into the top five.
Meanwhile, compared to the full marathon, the half marathon, which is 21-kilometre long, was more dramatic.
Defending champion Santoshi Shrestha was denied the top position this time by Army’s Purnalaxmi Neupane, who finished second in the previous edition.
Neupane bested Shrestha by a minute and 30 seconds to win the half-marathon in its fourth edition.
Neupane clocked 1 hour 17 minutes and 10 seconds while crossing the finish line.
The third and fourth positions also belonged to Army. Nisha Karki clocked 1:19:19 to claim a podium finish while Sunsari Rokaya (1:21:46) was fourth.
Neupane bagged Rs150,000 while Shrestha and Karki received Rs100,000 and Rs80,000, respectively.
Meanwhile, Dharma Maharjan, Ram Chandra Shrestha and Rewat Bahadur Dahal, respectively, finished as the top three runners in the veterans’ 5km run.
In the male 5km run, the top three positions belonged to Nepal Police Club’s Nageshwor Ahir, Army’s Rupesh Karki and India’s Prince Nisad, respectively.
Deepshikha Shahi, Swastika Shahi and Antima Budha were the top three finishers in the girls’ 5km run. In the boys’ 5km, Yubraj Budha, Ramesh Budha and Arbind Kumar Yadav claimed the top three positions.
Organised by the Nepal Olympic Committee, the event also hosted a three-kilometre walkathon.
