The Cyber Bureau of Nepal Police has issued a warning to the public to remain vigilant against fraudulent advertisements and links spreading across social media platforms and online services. These schemes, often disguised as gift packages or rental assistance, aim to exploit users financially through misuse of banking and digital platforms, the Bureau said.
In its statement on Wednesday, the Bureau highlighted the rise of scams on platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, Telegram, WhatsApp, Messenger, and Viber. It urged users to adopt secure practices while using digital tools and banking services.
The Bureau expressed concern over an increase in fraudulent activities masquerading as online job advertisements and sponsored links. “Deceptive links sent under the guise of online job opportunities and sponsored ads have significantly increased, luring people into scams,” the statement read.
Common scams include fraudulent activities related to online marketplaces, gift packages, non-refundable booking fees for PTE exams, and rental assistance through online platforms. Scammers often exploit mobile wallets like eSewa and Khalti, or pose as financial institutions to request OTP (one-time password) codes from unsuspecting users.
A growing trend involves ‘money mule accounts,’ where individuals lease their personal bank accounts for illegal transactions. The Bureau urged the public to refrain from renting out their accounts and to be cautious about transferring funds to suspicious accounts.
To minimise risks, the Bureau emphasised the need to safeguard personal bank accounts, avoid sharing OTPs, and prevent unauthorised individuals from accessing banking services. It reiterated its commitment to raising awareness and tackling cyber fraud.
