The family of Kul Bahadur Tamang, who was killed in a clash between the supporters of CPN-UML and CPN (Maoist Centre) on May 9, have fled their home at Jugu of Gaurishankar Village Council-2 in Dolakha after the local Maoist supporters allegedly threatened to kill them.

Tamang’s widow, Sangmaya, and their two children have arrived in Charikot, the district headquarters, to escape harm and seek justice. Sangmaya has filed an application at the District Police Office, seeking protection.

She said the Maoist cadres, who were involved in her husband’s death, had threatened to kill her and the children over phone.

Thirty-nine Maoist members, including Devi Khadka, the former state minister; Ganga Karki, the party’s central secretariat member; and Bishal Khadka, the party’s assistant in-charge, have been accused behind Tamang’s death that took place in the run-up to first phase of local elections held on the May 14.

DSP Rabin Karki said they have arrested nine suspects in connection to the incident. Police are also after other suspects who are on the run, he added.

Tamang was the son of Gore Tamang who was  contesting in the May 14 polls for the post of ward member from the UML.
