Tata EV a key player in the Nepali market
Yash Khandelwal, head of international business, TATA Passenger Electric Mobility Ltd, talks about TATA’s strategies for boosting sales in Nepal.
Post Report
Yash Khandelwal, head of international business, TATA Passenger Electric Mobility Ltd, recently visited Kathmandu to launch the new Tata EV brand. Electric vehicle (EV) imports in Nepal have surpassed those of traditional gas-powered vehicles, marking a milestone in the country’s transition to cleaner transport. In the first half of the current fiscal year, ended mid-January, Nepal imported 12,974 four-wheelers—including passenger buses, microbuses, and private vehicles. Of these, 7,349 units were EVs, putting Nepal on track to replacing petroleum-based light vehicle imports with EVs by 2031, aligning with the nation’s sustainability commitments. EVs are environmentally friendly, with zero tailpipe emissions, thus helping to reduce air pollution. Beyond environmental considerations, Nepal has experienced an intense competition between China and India in their push to dominate the EV market. In an email interview with the Post, Khandelwal shared TATA’s strategies for boosting sales in Nepal. Excerpts:
How do you view the growth of Nepal’s EV market? Where does Tata figure in it?
The adoption rate of EVs in the personal segment has accelerated in recent years. From close to 14 percent EV penetration in 2021-22, it has now exceeded 80 percent. Several factors have contributed to this surge, including favourable government taxation policies on EVs, increased environmental awareness, availability of green financing, better operational costs, a growing EV ecosystem, and rising competition among EV brands. A crucial driver of this growth has been the expanding EV ecosystem. Since launching our EVs in 2021, we have focused on introducing high-quality products and supporting the ecosystem's development. With rising sales, we have strategically expanded our EV infrastructure. Today, we proudly have the largest EV ecosystem in Nepal, with over 185 charging stations, more than 16 dedicated EV service centres, and 21 sales outlets nationwide.
Can you tell us about the ongoing competition between Chinese and Tata EVs?
The EV market in Nepal is growing rapidly, and we welcome healthy competition as it fosters innovation and provides better choices for customers. Competition ultimately benefits the entire market by accelerating growth and broadening consumer options.

How do you compare the EV market in Nepal to other South Asian markets?
Nepal’s EV market has grown rapidly over the past 2-3 years, driven by supportive government policies, attractive pricing, preferential financing, diverse product options, and rising environmental awareness. Additionally, local partners have significantly invested in developing EV infrastructure—such as charging points and skilled workforce training for repair and maintenance. Nepal’s focus on clean energy, supported by its hydropower surplus, makes EV adoption a natural fit. Across South Asia, similar growth patterns are emerging, especially in India, where strong government policies, local manufacturing, and charging infrastructure expansion have driven adoption. Bhutan is another market experiencing strong EV momentum, with a clear government focus on sustainable transportation.
Where does Tata.ev stand in this growing EV market?
