Local body is foundation of democracy: Upreti
Chief Election Commissioner Nilkantha Upreti has said that the local bodies' election should be conducted sooner to empower democracy.Ekantipur Report
At an orientation programme on election and media, Upreti said that foundation of the democracy is election of the local bodies. "Local level's election should be held sooner. Democracy will flourish and become sustainable after the election at the local levels," Upreti added.
The Chief Election Commissioner pointed out that local level's election was needed to empower the people through a democratic process.
Expressing concerns over delay in local bodies' election for long, Upreti added that we have become reluctant to opt for the democratic process by not holding the local bodies' election.
"Culture of democracy should be developed from the local level. Our democracy is limited only in speeches, not in process," he argued.
Hinting at the by-election in Baglung Constituency-1, Upreti warned that whoever found breaching the election code of conduct would be brought to book.
He also claimed that the by-election in Baglung-1 would be an exemplary one.
Likewise, the Election Commission has expedited the preparations for the by-election in the constituency. Election officers and assistant election officers are given training on the use of electronic voting machines from Wednesday.
The by-election at Baglung-1 is being conducted on coming April 11. The constituency remains vacant after lawmaker of the constituency, Hari Bahadur Khadka, died in a road accident on December 3 last year RSS
