Manchester United skipper Bruno Fernandes was announced the English Premier League player of the 2025-26 season on Saturday.
It is the first time that Fernandes, who began his Premier Legue journey with Manchester United in January 2020, has been voted the player of the season.
“Fernandes is in a sensational form,” the League states in an announcement on its website. “Fernandes has been the driving force in a resurgent Red Devils side who have secured third place and a UEFA Champions League spot.”
The Portguese was at the driving seat as Manchester United, with a match in hand, are finishing third this season. The 13-time Premier League winners had finished 15th last season.
Fernandes has contributed 28 goals—eight goals and 20 assists—for the club this season as United stay third with 19 wins, 11 draws and seven losses in 37 games. They are followed by Aston Villa (62 points).
United are travelling for their last fixture of the league against Brighton and Home Albion, which kicks off at 8:45pm Nepali time alongside all other nine fixtures. The 2025-26 season, already won by Arsenal with a game remaining, will then conclude.
The Red Devils have already thanked the fans for the season after their 3-2 win over Nottingham Forest at Old Trafford last week. The last home game for United also marked the farewell of Casemiro, the Brazilian who joined from Real Madrid in August 2022.
Further, with head coach Michael Carrick getting a permanent deal for two years after 11 wins in his last 16 games as an interim, United can pose a bigger challenge in the Premier League as well as the Champions League next season.
A win in their last game would end United’s campaign on a high. However, alongside the win, eyes will be on Fernandes, not for him to find the back of the net, but to assist.
With 20 assists already this season, the Portugal midfielder is tied to Arsenal great Thierry Henry (2002-03) and former Manchester City star Kevin De Bruyne (2019-20) for most assists in a single Premier League campaign.
He can stand alone at the top if he gets at least one more against Brighton.
“I'm very happy for the assist and for the win, and to finish the season on a high,” Fernandes had said after his record-equalling feat. “I got to 20, let's see [if I can get to 21], we have one more game. It’s the highest I've done in the Premier League so I am very happy with it.”
Earlier this month, Fernandes was also voted as footballer of the year in England by football writers.
In March, Fernandes was voted Player of the Month, equalling the number of times his former Manchester United teammate Cristiano Ronaldo won the award (six).
“The 31-year-old has written himself into the history books already, by surpassing David Beckham’s status as Manchester United’s top creator,” the Premier League writes. “Overall, Fernandes has created 132 chances this season, the most in the Premier League and an incredible 43 chances more than the next-best, Liverpool’s Dominik Szoboszlai.”
Beckham previously held the club's record for the most assists in a single Premier League season, setting up 15 goals in the 1999/2000 campaign.
