Manang Marshyangdi Club defeated Three Star Club 1-0 at the ANFA Complex to finally snap their winless streak in the Martyrs Memorial A-Division League on Sunday.
Chetan Kumar Tharu’s 38th minute strike was enough to give record eight-time champions their first victory after eight matches.
Tharu slammed from close range taking advantage of a blunder from Three Star goalkeeper Purna Chemjung, who failed to judge Diawandou Diagne’s free kick that hit the woodwork before finding Tharu in the six yard box.
Manang had played seven draws in as many games under their new coach Bishnu Gurung. Their previous win came in a 1-0 triumph against Tribhuvan Army Club on May 3.
The outcome also boosted Manang’s survival hopes as they moved up to 10th position in the 14-team standings with 28 points from 22 matches. They are four clear of second-from bottom Friends Club and seven away from bottom-placed Khumaltar. Both Friends and Khumaltar have played a game less and are in action on Monday.
But the defeat is another nightmare to Megh Raj KC’s Three Star, who have now gone winless in 11 successive matches. It was also their fourth straight defeat and the former four-time champions now stare at the face of relegation as they sit in the 11th position with just 26 points.
At the Chyasal Stadium, New Road Team inflicted Satdobato Youth Club a third straight defeat with a 2-1 victory.
Nicolas Serge Song put NRT ahead in the 66th minute when his shot deflected off Ekraj Budhathoki before finding the net.
Sanam Sodemba Limbu furthered NRT’s advantage minutes later with a header after Kritish Ratna Chhunju showed magic with his footwork to dance past four defenders and cross for Limbu.
Shiva Subedi pulled a consolation goal from Satdobato in the 81st minute heading a pass from Umesh Rai, who had just entered the ground to replace Narendra Chaudhary.
Satdobato had lost 4-0 against Friends and 1-0 to Khumaltar in their previous two matches.
The win moved NRT level on 29 points with the losing side Satdobato and Himalayan Sherpa Club. Satdobato occupy the sixth spot, Sherpa lie in the seventh position and NRT are eighth.
