Adam Rossington smashed an unbeaten century as Pokhara Avengers posted a formidable 201-2 against Karnali Yaks in Tuesday’s second match of the Nepal Premier League (NPL) at the TU Cricket International Ground in Kirtipur.
Winning the toss and bowling first, Karnali were punished by Rossington’s explosive 108 not out off just 58 deliveries.
The English wicketkeeper-batter struck 11 fours and seven sixes, reaching his century in 55 balls. This is only the third century in NPL history—all belonging to overseas players.
Karnali’s Scottish batter Mark Watt had scored 114 against Lumbini Lions earlier this season, while last year Pokhara’s American batter Andries Gous had made 104 against Lumbini.
Pokhara became only the second team to cross the 200-run mark in the NPL. Earlier, Biratnagar Kings had amassed 220 against Pokhara in the same tournament.
Captain Kushal Bhurtel departed for 18 after hitting three fours and one six from 17 balls, but Rossington dominated the innings with strong support from Jason Roy. Playing his first match of the tournament, the England World Cup winner made 46 off 34 balls, striking two fours and three sixes. The pair put on a 127-run stand for the second wicket off 72 balls.
Dhananjaya Lakshan, also making his tournament debut, contributed an unbeaten 23 off 11 balls with three fours and a six.
For Karnali, Nandan Yadav took 1-34 from four overs and Mark Watt claimed 1-24 from three overs. Captain Sompal Kami conceded 50 runs from his four overs, while Gulshan Jha gave away 35 from three without success.
Pokhara have won just one of their four matches so far and must win all their remaining three games to stay in contention for the play-offs.
Karnali, with only one win from five matches, must win both of their remaining fixtures to keep their play-off hopes alive.
