Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) has confirmed that five teams will compete in the maiden Kathmandu Mayor Cup one-day national cricket tournament set to be held from March 6.
In a statement on Wednesday, the cricket governing body named the four semi-finalists of the recently concluded Prime Minister Cup apart from Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) — assembled team — as the participants of the tournament.
Tribhuvan Army Club and Nepal APF Club were the winners and runners up in the Prime Minister Cup held from January 15 to 30. Nepal Police Club and Bagmati Province were the other semi-finalists. The KMC will have an assembled team consisting of best players from other six teams — Province 1, 2, Gandaki, Lumbini, Karnali and Sudurpaschim Provinces — who competed in the Prime Minister Cup.
The event will be played in the round robin format and the team finishing on top of the table will be crowned the champions. The tournament will be played at the Mulpani and TU cricket grounds. The eight-day event would conclude on March 13.
Earlier, CAN had signed a sponsorship deal with Kathmandu Metropolitan City to host the Mayor Cup. The Kathmandu Metropolitan City has agreed to provide Rs 5 million to hold the event.
