The world's largest natural pearl will be put on display in the Philippines soon, after the 100-million-U.S. dollar treasure was recovered from a burned house.
According to Aileen Amurao, a Philippine tourism officer, the pearl was first discovered in 2006 by a fisherman of the Palawan Island.
The fisherman didn't know how much it was worth and tucked the pearl away as a good luck charm, Amurao said, adding the fisherman only thought to hand in the find to the authorities after his house was burned down by a fire.
"We now need help from gemologists to fully certify it," Amurao said.
The pearl is 67 cm long, 30.5 cm wide and weighs 34 kg. The previous record was held by the Pearl of Lao Tze, which weighs 6.4 kg and is worth 35 million dollars. It was also retrieved near Palawan Island.
