Kathmandu Valley sees surge of people leaving for polls
Buses, microbuses and jeeps packed as voters head to home districts ahead of elections.
Post Report
The number of people leaving the Kathmandu Valley to vote in the March 5 House of Representatives election is rising daily. New Bus Park in Gongabu has seen the heaviest passenger traffic in recent days, with Chabahil, Koteshwar, Kalanki, Balkhu, and Balaju also crowded with vehicles heading out of the valley.
On Sunday alone, 480 microbuses and passenger buses departed from New Bus Park. Traffic congestion on Sunday and Monday caused hours-long jams on the highways connecting Kathmandu. Kathmandu Valley Traffic Police said 353,046 passengers left the valley over eight days from February 22 to March 1.
Crowds have also formed at Jadibuti, a key transit point for voters from eastern districts. Many travellers have reserved jeeps, minibuses, microbuses, and buses, causing traffic jams there early Tuesday morning.
