According to the Metropolitan Police Office, the hologram sticker and card used for preparing the fake licences were brought by a man named Krishna Murari. The gang is believed to have worked in collusion with the Department of Transport Management (DTM) employees.
Police say the gang, during its years in operation, regularly made financial transactions with DTM employees, adding that the employees had been bribed for every fake licence made.
“The preliminary investigation and statements of the convicts suggest the fake driving licences were taken to the DTM Office for a valid stamp,” Police said, adding that the gang had been making as many as 12 fake driving licenses a day.
“The investigation revealed that the gang would use a valid licence number of a deceased licence bearer or a licence that is out of use for the purpose,” police said. Genuine hologram stickers were found to have been used for the fake license. According to police, the fake licences were sold for Rs 18,000 to Rs 20, 000 each. Police have confiscated a printer, 52 empty cards to make fake driving licences, 46 filled cards including 35 with signatures, stamps and photos, three hologram stickers, among other materials. According to the MTPD, at least 20 fake driving licences are confiscated every year.
