The number of Nepali students in Germany has been constantly rising since 2001, which saw outbound of 100 students in various German educational institutions.

“The number of Nepali students in Germany has increased tremendously. We are getting many students from Nepal having good command over German language,” German Ambassador to Nepal Matthias Mayer told reporters on Wednesday.

Similarly, with the rise in Nepali students in Germany, the number of German students in Nepal, funded by German Academic Exchange Service ( DAAD) , has almost tripled in the last ten years.

With the rise of Nepali students pursuing higher studies, the DAAD has introduced scholarships for Nepali students, for pursuing M. Tech in engineering systems, biomedical engineering, environmental science and engineering, water resource engineering and technology and development and Ph. D. in renewal energy, climate change, health, biodiversity and good governance, at Indian Institute of Technology, Mumbai starting from this year.

“There would  be 15 such scholarships available for M. Tech aspirants that will cover cost of education, air fare from home country to India, health insurance, annual study and research subsidy and will also include monthly stipend.

The DAAD will be offering 5 scholarships to students enrolling for Ph. D programmes bearing several expenditures,” said a statement by the DAAD.

Several other short-term as well as long term scholarships are being provided by the DAAD to various Nepali university teachers, faculties and students in various genres at post-doctoral level and graduate level.

There are some special reasons behind Nepali students choosing Germany because tuition and living costs are cheap compared to other countries where students will have to get enrolled in reputed universities, said ambassador Mayer.

“We want to see more foreign students,” he said adding that we would also like to see more skilled students having a strong information technology background.
