Road accidents down after anti-drunk driving campaign
The Metropolitan Traffic Police Division has charged 133,018 people for drunk driving since the campaign began in December 2011.by the MTPD on Friday revealed that the campaign has so far collected Rs 120 million in fines.
As many as 58,457 licenses of inebriated drivers were perforated while 377 people were charged with public offence. MTPD said 28 licenses which got perforated for six times have been sent to Transport division for suspension.
MTPD Chief and Deputy Inspector General Keshab Adhikari said the campaign against drunk driving has helped reduce the number of traffic accidents. “Now we feel happy that few number of people are caught for driving under the influence of alcohol. It is a sign that people have become aware, but there are still many people who remain ignorant about the risk of drunk driving,” said DIG Adhikari.
He said this year alone 41,071 people were booked for drunk driving, and the MTPD collected a revenue of over Rs 30 million. The existing punishment for drunk-driving is a fine of Rs 1,000 and 20-minute of compulsory lecture on
the risk of drunk driving at the MTPD.
Rotary Club provides masks for traffic officers
The Rotary Club of Pashupati-Kathmandu handed over 1,000 masks to traffic police on Friday.
The masks were handed over to the Chief of Metropolitan Police Traffic Division Keshab Adhikari in a function on Friday. Speaking at the event, Adhikari said the masks will help minimise the risk of respiratory diseases among traffic officers. Durga Prasad Adhikari, president of Rotary Club, said their support to the traffic police will continue in the future.
