Tension ran high in Suwarna Rural Municipality of Bara district on Monday after a clash broke out between the police and students.
The situation arose after the students tried to vandalise the education department of the rural municipal office and a school. The students allegedly pelted stones at the security personnel after the latter tried to intervene to bring the situation under control.
Police fired over two dozen shells of tear gas to control the unruly crowd.
Scores of security personnel and students were injured in the clash.
Personnel from Nepal Police and the Armed Police Force have been stationed in the area.
The incident arose after the local body shuffled teachers and principals of various schools to improve the quality of education in the area, said local Educational Department Chief Bidhyananda Yadav.
Rural Municipality chair Rajesh Ray Yadav has accused the teachers of using the students to create a ruckus.
