A section of the Prithvi Highway has sunk at Krishnabhir in Benighat Rorang Rural Municipality of Dhading, completely blocking the Muglin–Kathmandu section, traffic police said.

The road gave way after the Trishuli river eroded its base, according to Dhading Chief District Officer Laxmi Pandey Gautam. The river’s water level has risen since early Sunday.

Dilli Narayan Pandey, chief of Bagmati Province Traffic Police, said the subsidence occurred earlier on Sunday.

The Prithvi Highway is a vital artery into Kathmandu, linking the capital with Pokhara and western Nepal and carrying heavy passenger and freight traffic.

The disruption comes as the BP Highway, another key route linking Kathmandu with eastern Nepal and the eastern Terai, remains vulnerable after major flood damage.

Floods in September 2024 destroyed or severely damaged a 30.5-kilometre stretch between Bhakundebesi and Nepalthok. Reconstruction is still under way, with traffic continuing through temporary diversions along parts of the route.
