Nepal recorded 101 incidents of press freedom violations across the country in the past fiscal year, according to an annual report released by the Press Council Nepal on Wednesday.

The incidents, recorded between mid-July 2025 and mid-July 2026, involved various forms of interference, intimidation and attacks against journalists and media outlets, according to the council’s annual records.

A statement issued by Dipak Khanal, spokesperson for the council, said 119 working journalists were affected by the incidents. They included 113 men and six women. The number of journalists affected was higher than the number of incidents because some cases involved more than one journalist, the council said.

Threats against journalists accounted for the largest share of violations during the period. The council recorded 27 attacks, 13 cases involving professional insecurity, ten cases of obstruction or seizure, and five cases of mistreatment.

It also recorded three arrests, three cases of verbal abuse, three instances of policy-related restrictions and one suspicious death during the year.

The council separately identified four cases involving the misuse of press freedom. Two of those occurred in Bagmati province, while Madhesh and Koshi provinces each recorded one.

The Press Council Nepal said it had continued monitoring the media, hearing complaints and pursuing action against violations under the Press Council Act 1992, which mandates the council to protect press freedom and uphold professional standards in journalism.
