Police arrested a district leader of the Nepal Student Union (NSU), the student wing of Nepali Congress, for misbehaving with Purbanchal University Service Commission Chairman Mahesh Raj Dahal.
The president of the student union’s Morang chapter Saroj Pokharel was arrested on Wednesday from Budhiganga of Morang.
According to Superintendent of Police Prabhu Prasad Dhakal, Pokharel was arrested after a complaint was filed at the district police office against him by the varsity’s service commission.
“We have initiated legal actions against the accused on charge of misbehaving with Dahal,” Dhakal told the Post. “Search for other members of the union, who have also been named in the registered complaint, is underway.”
On Monday, NSU members entered Dahal’s residence at Aapgachhi of Itahari Sub-Metropolitan and smeared black paint on Dahal’s face.
After being appointed as the service commission chairman, Dahal had issued the university’s first vacancy notice after a gap of 22 years for 115 posts, ranging from officials to unranked employees, on March 29, 2022.
“The first phase of examinations was held from September 11 to 13, and the results of which were published on October 10,” Dahal said. “The student bodies have been protesting ever since the results came out, hindering us from moving forward with other procedures.”
During the demonstrations, the NSU and factions of the All Nepal National Independent Students’ Union had padlocked the service commission’s office.
The lock was later removed after discussions with the local leaders.
