Narayan Raya Yadav of Sarlahi who had come to the Capital to participate in protest against no-payment of dues by sugar mills, died of heart attack on Tuesday.

He was owed dues of total around Rs2.4 million by Annapurna Sugar Mills, Sarlahi and died while undergoing treatment at Ganga Lal Hospital, said Rakesh Mishra, patron of Sugarcane Farmer Struggle Committee.

“He had been admitted to Helping Hands Hospital on Tuesday morning after he fainted at Krishna Mandir at Jorpati where he was staying in Kathmandu after coming for the protest programme,” Mishra said. “He was 72.”

According to Mishra, he has three sons and a wife and he arrived in Kathmandu on December 15.

Hari Shyam Raya, a fellow protester said that they were planning to stay in the Capital until their dues were cleared although the protest was withdrawn on Monday evening.

“Despite the agreement, unless our dues got clear we were planning to stay here and Yadav had also agreed to it,” Raya said.

He was saying that he would not return to his village unless all the dues got cleared and it seems that he was not happy with the Monday agreement thinking the dues would not be cleared this time too.

Despite his age and the cold weather and other difficulties while staying here, he had only thought of getting his dues that the mill owed him three to four years back, according to Raya.

After 16 days of protest in the Capital demanding the dues to be cleared, the sugarcane farmers and the Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Supplies reached a four-point deal Monday evening to pay outstanding dues to them within 21 days.

Mishra said that the dues were supposed to be distributed to the farmers from Tuesday. A total of Rs50 million has been allocated to be paid to the farmers of Sarlahi, according to the Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Supplies.
