The bill tabled by Minister for Energy Janardan Sharma was expected to be passed with a majority of the lawmakers, but Speaker Onsari Ghartimagar directed the Parliament Secretariat to confirm the number of lawmakers after lawmaker Prem Suwal raised an objection towards lack of quorum.
The bill could not pass as the total number of lawmakers present at the meeting stood 90 against 149 of minimum requirement. Minimum one-third of lawmakers are needed to pass any proposal from the House.
On the occasion, Energy Minister Sharma said that the bill was brought with an aim to make the hydro electricity sector more systematic, descent and provide a reliable power supply to the folks.
Sharma said that the government was working to generate 17,000 megawatt of power within the next seven years and provide minimum share of Rs 100,000 to each household across the country and use the youth in foreign employment for hydropower generation.
He said that current the government has imported only 45 megawatt more electricity than the previous government, adding that additional and unnecessary power was not imported.
The next meeting of the Parliament has been scheduled for 15:00 pm on Saturday. RSS
