Kumari Rasaili went blind in her left eye after the surgery in December, 2015. She said blood started to pool in her eye following the operation.
“Though I am diabetes patient, the doctors had assured me that my condition would not affect the surgery outcome,” she said. “But there was a complication and I had to undergo another operation in Nepalgunj before I was referred to New Delhi for advanced treatment.”
Kumari’s husband Khime Kami said they spent around Rs 800,000 in treatment until the doctors in New Delhi told them that her eye had been permanently damaged.
The couple has registered complaint at the DAO, demanding sufficient compensation.
Last year, eight cataract patients of Kalyan, Dasahrathpur and Lekhpharsa had lost their vision after undergoing cataract surgery in Surkhet Eye Hospital. Advocate Nandaram Bhandari said that there are various cases of blindness caused by cataract surgery in the district. “Many victims cannot get justice as they had already passed the deadline to register their complaints in the DAO,” said Bhandari.
