Tabala Maestro Upadhyaya honoured with Nararaj Dhakal Music Award
This year's Sangeet Praveen Nararaj Dhakal Smriti Award has been conferred on legendary Tabala Maestro Hom Nath Upadhyaya. The award is given every year by Nara Jyoti Sangeet Pratisthan.

Likewise, the Pratisthan also announced a new award category called "Nararaj Rameshwar Yuba Puraskar". According to Chairman of the Pratisthan Prabhu Raj Dhakal, who is also the son of Sangeet Praveen Nararaj Dhakal and a classical musician himself, the new award title was announced in order to honour and promote the contribution of newer generations in preserving classical music in Nepal. The award this year was given to classical singer Bishnu Acharya. A Dhrupad singer, who has completed Master degree from Banaras Hindu University, India, is a music teacher as well.
The award ceremony was held on Monday at Tridevi Temple, Thamel. The award function was followed by a classical concert.
Speaking at the programme, Prabhu Raj Dhakal said the award not only commemorates Sangeet Praveen Nararaj Dhakal, but also stirs a movement in promoting original Nepali classical music.
Nararaj Dhakal is often credited for having introduced ragas and their learning in Nepali language. Before him, classical music used to be taught in Hindi and Urdu languages. Be composed a number of songs in Nepali and composed them on the basis of several Ragas, documenting them for the learning of future generations.
