Meghauli Airport in Chitwan has been brought back online under the initiative of CG Hotels and Resorts that owns the luxury Taj Safari Resort Meghauli Serai. 

The landing strip had been carved out of the jungle in 1961 for the visit of Queen Elizabeth and Prince Phillip to Chitwan. 

Subsequently, the airport served adventure seekers visiting Tiger Tops until the government decided to remove all resorts and hotels inside Chitwan National Park. The airport has been lying idle for seven years.

The frequency of charter flights from Kathmandu to Meghauli is expected to rise significantly as Meghauli Serai is popular among high-end tourists, said CG Hotels and Resorts. Regular passenger flights will also be operated at the airport, it added. 

Nepal Airlines led the reopening by operating a charter flight from Kathmandu to Meghauli on April 13. The flight carried Binod Chaudhary, president of the Chaudhary Group, and guests from India and other foreign countries. The resumption of flights to Meghauli has spread excitement among locals as it has boosted tourism prospects. “The resumption of flights to Meghauli, following the opening of an international-standard wildlife resort, is considered to be a boon to tourism in the region,” the CG Hotels and Resorts said. 

Jungle safari goers can fly from Kathmandu to Meghauli and then reach Meghauli Serai after a 15-minute drive. The flight will considerably ease tourist access to Chitwan National Park.

Situated on the boundary of Chitwan National Park, which has been declared a World Heritage Site, the Meghauli Serai resort operates with a vision to provide the highest standard hospitality services in the midst of natural beauty and wildlife diversity. The resort has 13 twin-sharing rooms, 16 villas and one presidential suite.

The Meghauli Serai resort is managed by the internationally famed Taj Safaris of Taj Hotels and Resorts. It has aimed to bring a substantial number of high-end international tourists to Nepal.
