The Solukhumbu district branch of Nepal Food Corporation (NFC) at Salleri is struggling to sell subsidised rice as the local grocers have been selling rice at a cheaper rate.
Consumers said they were better off buying rice in the local market than at the NFC depots because of price differences.
The price of rice being sold by the NFC depots is higher than the rice available at the market.
Mansuli rice, for instance, is being sold for Rs 47.50 per kilogram by the NFC when the same quantity of the same rice can be bought at for Rs 45 in the market.
Shambhu Prasad Regmi, chief of the NFC branch office, said the Salleri depot had 242 qunitals of rice waiting to be sold.
Asked whether the NFC was considering lowering the price of rice, Regmi said they have sent a letter regarding the matter to the District Administration Office and the NFC central office, but have not received any reply till date.
The price of rice available at the NFC is higher than the market price because of high transportation cost, Regmi said, adding that they were preparing to return the rice to Lukla depot.
