Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister Bimalendra Nidhi has said that the constitution should be amended immediately for its effective implementation.

“Constitution amendment is a must for political stability. An amendment proposal

will be tabled soon,” Nidhi said at a programme in Janakpur on Saturday.

This was Nidhi’s first visit to his home district Dhanusha after his appointment as the DPM last month. The Nepali Congress district committee organised a programme to felicitate the senior party leader. Nidhi hinted that the amendment proposal would incorporate issues like state demarcation, naturalised citizenship, formation of the National Assembly on the basis of population, and language. He, however, did not go into the specifics.

Talking to reporters at Janakpur Airport earlier in the day, Nidhi expressed his confidence that the main opposition CPN-UML would also support the amendment process. He claimed that the Maoist-Congress coalition was committed to solving the problems of Madhes.

Nidhi said that the major parties would reach consensus over the number of local bodies soon.
